Solution: atikmdag.sys (blue screen with ATI graphics card)


Is your PC crashed and shows the file "atikmdag.sys" as the cause on the blue screen? This is not a virus, but a faulty video driver.

Windows Error "atikmdag.sys"

The atikmdag.sys file from the error message comes from an AMD ATI video driver. The graphics driver for your ATI graphics card most likely did not install properly. Most of the time this is a Radeon graphics card.

Solution 1: Reinstall the ATI driver

  1. Download and install the latest ATI driver .
  2. Press the key combination [ Windows ] + [ E ] to open Windows Explorer .
  3. Navigate to the folder: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
  4. Selects the atikmdag.sys file .
  5. If you do not see any file extensions, you have to show them first .
  6. Press the F2 key and rename the file to atikmdag.sys.old .
  7. Now navigate to the ATI folder in Windows Explorer. By default this is:C:\ATI
  8. Copy the file atikmdag.sy_ from the folder to the desktop (note the underscore in the file extension).
  9. Open the Start menu, typing cmdand presses Enter to open the command prompt .
  10. Type in cd deskopand press Enter to go to the desktop directory.
  11. Type the command EXPAND.EXE atikmdag.sy_ atikmdag.sys and press Enter to expand the atikmdag.sy_ file into the atikmdag.sys file .
  12. Close the command prompt and copy the atikmdag.sys file from the desktop to the directory C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.
  13. Restarts Windows.
